Montana RV Camping Guide

Bozeman and Yellowstone Country

Bozeman, Livingston, Gardiner, and West Yellowstone provide access to mountain scenery, museums, fishing, trails, and Yellowstone National Park. Yellowstone doesn't require a reservation simply to enter, but campground and lodging reservations are strongly recommended and often fill months ahead; most park roads open seasonally between mid-April and May and begin closing again in fall. Don't assume that staying near one entrance gives quick access to the whole park — Yellowstone is enormous, traffic can be slow, and wildlife jams regularly add time. West Yellowstone offers convenient access to the western geyser basins, while Gardiner provides access to Mammoth Hot Springs and the northern range.

Glacier Country and the Flathead Valley

Whitefish, Columbia Falls, Kalispell, and the Flathead Valley serve as major bases for Glacier National Park and Flathead Lake. Going-to-the-Sun Road is one of Montana's signature drives, but much of it isn't suitable for full-size RVs — vehicles and combinations longer than 21 feet or wider than 8 feet are prohibited between Avalanche Creek and Rising Sun, and vehicles taller than 10 feet may have trouble beneath rock overhangs west of Logan Pass. Glacier won't require general vehicle reservations in 2026, but the park is introducing three-hour timed parking at Logan Pass and a ticketed shuttle pilot.

Billings and the Yellowstone River Valley

Montana's largest city anchors the east with brewery stays, rimrock views, and a hometown winery story we've told on the blog. I-90 and I-94 continue toward Wyoming and North Dakota; Little Bighorn is an hour southeast.

Helena, Great Falls, and Central Montana

Helena and Great Falls offer state history, river scenery, museums, and access to central Montana's ranching communities and mountain ranges. Near Great Falls, First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park preserves one of North America's largest known bison jump sites, and its education center interprets the relationship between bison and the Indigenous peoples of the region — one of many places statewide to learn from Montana's twelve federally recognized Tribal nations through Indigenous-led tours, museums, and cultural centers.

Missoula and the West

River-town Missoula pairs trout water with taprooms, and the Bitterroot Valley's farms run south under 9,000-foot peaks. I-90 west drops toward Idaho's panhandle lakes.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to RV camp in Montana?

July through September is the dependable window — high passes open, rivers fishable, huckleberries ripening. June can still be snowy up high; late September brings golden larch and cottonwood with elk bugling in the valleys. Winter belongs to locals and the truly winterized.

Can I drive my RV on Going-to-the-Sun Road?

Not over Logan Pass in most rigs — the alpine section restricts vehicles to roughly 21 feet long and 8 feet wide, which excludes nearly all RVs. Park at the lower lots and ride the free shuttle, or drive a tow vehicle. Check the park's current vehicle-size rules and reservation requirements before your trip; both matter in summer.

How far apart are services in Montana, really?

Far — 80–100 miles between fuel stops is normal off the interstates. Top off at half a tank, carry water, and don't count on cell coverage between towns. It's the price of having the road to yourself, and most members decide it's a bargain.

Is overnight RV parking legal in Montana?

Montana is relaxed by national standards, but gateway towns near the parks post and enforce restrictions in summer. Harvest Hosts stays skip the hunt: an invited overnight on private property with the host's permission — often with the best view on the trip.

How does RV camping at Harvest Hosts work in Montana?

Harvest Hosts is an annual membership that lets RVers stay overnight at 143 Montana breweries, farms, and attractions with no camping fees. Members request stays through the app, arrive in a self-contained RV, and support their hosts with a purchase — a taproom flight, stone-ground flour from a working gristmill, or ranch beef for the freezer.

Is Harvest Hosts worth it for Montana RV trips?

Yes — park-gateway campgrounds run $50–80+/night in summer and book out months ahead, so the $99/year Classic membership pays for itself in about two nights. On a Glacier-to-Yellowstone loop, host stays are both the budget move and the better story.

Close to I-15. Large, level, gravel lot to the side of Brewery. Staff was welcoming. Perfect place to relax, enjoy good food (chicken wraps & fries) and beer. Tables inside and outside. Train is close, but not an issue for us. We will be returning on our return trip from Glacier NP.

Easy overnight with mostly flat ground. They have at least 10 places to park so it felt nice to be amongst other campers. We loved the saloon vibes, getting to order some bar food, playing pool and getting on the wifi. And the sky really put on a show with the sunset.

The host was very nice greeted me before I even made it up to the door. Told me where I could park and set up. Was nice to allow me to go set up and all before I settled up I did pay for a hookup spot. I then went to eat at the bar the food was really good my steak was seasoned and cooked perfectly as I asked. Atmosphere was great bartender was in top of it making sure I was good. They had live music which was a plus being really out in the middle of no where was peaceful.

We had a great overnight stay at Watchdog Winery through Harvest Hosts. There was plenty of room to park our RV, and the hosts were incredibly friendly, welcoming, and accommodating. We enjoyed the wine and appreciated the relaxed atmosphere. The property is next to an active train track, so you’ll hear train horns throughout the day and night. It didn’t bother us at all, and our kids actually thought it was entertaining to watch the trains go by. Overall, this is a wonderful Harvest Hosts location with great hospitality, good wine, and easy parking. We’d definitely stay here again!

A great spot just off the highway on a level gravel pad with a tsble and fire ring. The owners put up new signage while we were there, eliminating any confusion finding the site. We bought some fresh eggs before moving on.

The host gave great attention to us with instructions and met upon arrival. Parking was a breeze. Level ground with a 20amp hookup to keep the batteries charged. They have a garden and horses. Take a walk about the property the really see the views of the surrounding valley. 10 min fron Helena. Go tour the capitol and The Cathedral of St. Helena. we have a 40 ft motorcoach with a tow vehicle. Excellant place to relax. Thank you.
