TL;DR Lucinda and her husband share how they adventure by staying a month in each location, traveling within a two-hour radius for motorcycle rides, and using Harvest Hosts for overnight stops. Join them and share your adventures!

How We Travel with Two Motorcycles and an RV

When you start RVing, planning how you arrive at your destination is a huge part of the experience. You might be a weekend warrior or seasonal or a full-time RVer. Whatever path you have chosen, course planning is and will be a part of your routine.

We are full-time RVers traveling in a 44ft fifth wheel towed by a dually truck. We work, travel, and play along the road. One of our hobbies - motorcycle riding (my spouse on a Heritage and me on a Sportster with a sidecar) got us on the road. Your destination goals will probably be centered around your hobby, work, family, or all of those! We have learned to set up a planning process that includes our motorcycle riding hobby. As we plot travel adventures, we follow a regular ‘outline’. Now you can have some routine in your plans to make planning smoother and less stressful.

Here is the course we follow closely because it works with our lifestyle:

  • Length of Stay: We usually stay one month in a location for multiple reasons related to work, riding, and weather. Weather is something to think about because it can derail the best-laid plans. If we have a bad weather day, we still have time for hobbies another day.
  • Travel Time: Our next location is usually only days away. We do this because we ride motorcycles in a 2-hour radius from our current location. When driving to a new destination, we drive 4–5 hours daily. This puts us in a new exploration radius for riding motorcycles again. Whether you ride or want to visit a new area, traveling a certain radius will give you a new location to enjoy around your RV stay.
  • Overnights: Every time we plot a new ‘radius’, it takes us two days to get there. Our routine is to select a Harvest Hosts location for the ‘in-between’ stop. This is perfect in so many ways!
    • Arrive early - Since we arrive at a new location early in the afternoon, this gives us time to enjoy the local experience. We have learned so much taking advantage of this extra laid-back time. Some things we have learned have even altered our course, and we got to experience something we hadn’t anticipated.
    • Know what’s expected – Harvest Hosts overnights give us variety without extra planning. We have enjoyed farms, wineries, and museums –knowing they can handle our rig size in advance. Bonus - we don’t have to worry about setup or complications. We park and go!
    • Relax - Meeting other RVers at each location is amazing. We have run into motorcyclists, so we not only get to share our RV passion but our hobby passion as well. Seek out the stories!
    • Leave early - It’s an easy in and out. We can get out quickly and easily, in the morning and on to our destination. This gives you extra time in case of any road issues or delays.
    • Course corrections – If we ever need course corrections, there is always a Harvest Hosts nearby where you can stop in, relax, and figure out what you need to do next.

We hope we meet you at a Harvest Hosts location sometime! We’d love to share experiences, no matter what your traveling plans are or what hobbies you carry with you. But if you ride or have ridden, we’d love to talk about that too! We hope to meet you there!
