About
This museum campus offers visitors a comprehensive exploration of regional history across multiple world-class museums and historic sites. The main museum features seven exhibit galleries housing over 600,000 artifacts, including compelling displays on local history, the pioneering women's professional baseball league, and notable figures like the region's own Schuyler Colfax. The Studebaker National Museum showcases an exceptional collection tracing the automotive and industrial heritage of South Bend, from horse-drawn carriages through modern vehicles, and includes seven objects designated as National Treasuresโ€”among them the carriage Abraham Lincoln rode to Ford's Theatre the night of his assassination and a carriage used by the Marquis de Lafayette during his 1824 farewell tour of the United States. Guests can tour the exquisite 38-room Copshaholm mansion, completed in 1897 and furnished entirely with original pieces that provide an intimate glimpse into how the prominent Oliver family lived. Daily guided tours bring the home's rich history to life, while the surrounding Oliver Gardens offer a lush, peaceful setting. Adjacent to the mansion, the Worker's Home features rotating exhibits celebrating the region's labor history and is also open for daily tours. A research center on-site serves as the national repository for materials related to the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, while Kidsfirst provides engaging, interactive experiences designed for young visitors. The property provides excellent, well-lit parking with multiple level options suitable for RVs of various sizes. Guests consistently praise the quiet, safe neighborhood setting despite the downtown location, easy navigation to and around the grounds, and the convenient proximity to nearby attractions including the University of Notre Dame campus. The welcoming staff and responsive communication enhance the overall experience, making this a destination where visitors can comfortably spend multiple days exploring the extensive collections and historic grounds.
