Michigan RV Camping Guide

Southwest Michigan Wine Country

Michigan's densest winery cluster runs along the Lake Michigan Shore wine trail, an easy hop off I-94 for RVers coming up from Illinois. Fall adds u-pick orchards and cider mills to the overnight RV options.

Grand Rapids and the Lakeshore

Brewery stays run thick through Grand Rapids, Beer City USA, and the lakeshore towns from Holland to Saugatuck to Muskegon. Pull in by late afternoon, walk twenty feet to dinner and a flight at some of the state's best wineries and breweries.

Northern Michigan and Traverse City

The Old Mission and Leelanau peninsulas hold Michigan's most scenic winery stays, under an hour from Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The hilly countryside leads to many quaint towns and beautiful inland lakes you won't want to leave. Summer weekends fill fast, though. Request stays a few days ahead.

The Upper Peninsula

Hosts are sparser here but reward the drive: farm and museum stays near Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore anchor a Superior shoreline trip, and US-2 continues west into Wisconsin. Plan fuel stops ahead as services thin out between towns.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to RV camp in Michigan?

May through October is Michigan's main RV season. Summer is peak for the Great Lakes shorelines, while late September through mid-October brings fall color — peaking in the Upper Peninsula first, then moving south. Winter brings outdoor activities like cross country skiing, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing. Spring can be muddy at certain hosts, so check recent reviews if you're traveling in April or May.

Is overnight RV parking legal in Michigan?

Overnight parking rules vary by municipality in Michigan, and many rest areas and retail lots prohibit it. Harvest Hosts stays sidestep the question entirely: you're an invited guest on private property, with the host's permission — both legal and considerably more pleasant than a parking lot.

How does RV camping at Harvest Hosts work in Michigan?

Harvest Hosts is an annual membership that lets RVers stay overnight at 380 Michigan wineries, farms, breweries, and attractions with no camping fees. Members request stays through the app, arrive in a self-contained RV, and support their hosts by purchasing local products like wine, produce, a meal, or a museum ticket.

Can I take my RV across the Mackinac Bridge?

Yes. RVs and trailers cross the Mackinac Bridge daily. Motorhomes pay $5.00 per axle (passenger vehicles pay a flat $4.00). In high winds, RVs and other high-profile vehicles are limited to 20 mph or may require an escort. On occasion, the Bridge Authority can close the bridge due to severe weather such as extreme winds, rain and/or fog, so plan accordingly.

Can I use Harvest Hosts in Michigan during winter?

Yes, though options narrow, many farm and orchard hosts pause from November through April, particularly the further you travel north, while breweries, museums, and attractions typically welcome RVs year-round. Winter stays suit hardy, fully self-contained rigs; check each host's page for seasonal availability, and confirm your RV is winter-ready for Michigan temperatures.

Is Harvest Hosts worth it for Michigan RV trips?

Yes, for most self-contained RVers who camp more than a few nights a year. A Classic membership costs $99/year, and typically pays for itself within 2-3 nights compared to private campgrounds that charge $30-50/night. With 84 farm stays, 27 wineries, and 21 breweries in Michigan alone, a single Great Lakes road trip can easily cover the annual cost.

We had to change our plans due to RV repairs and they were so accommodating! Appreciated all the quick communication and flexibility! We were able to get level by taking a spot as you come in the driveway off to the left. We parked with our door facing the trees so looking out that way it looked like we were in a forest 😀 It was nice and quiet at night and dark too. Daycare traffic didn’t bother us as we were up at the time everyone was coming in, in the morning. Was a great spot to explore the area and get to Walmart, etc.

Hosts are very kind, personable, and accommodating. The scenery, sounds, and solace provided by the site is breathtaking. I was out in the area for work, but hoping I can go back to this site to just be present and take it all in. While there, I recommend picking up a bottle of their maple syrup… but maybe grab two, my kids already devoured it. Very much hoping to make it back there next summer.

We can’t say it enough, the hosts were amazing, very welcoming and helpful! Everyone in our party enjoyed our stay, the true “fluff farm” experience, we literally were set up and camped right beside the goats!! Were able to walk with them in the field, feed them snacks and watching them play in the field was the highlight of our morning coffee. Thanks again for the wonderful memories, this was our first stay as a harvest host member and you definitely didn’t disappoint. We will be back forsure !

We absolutely loved our stay. Such a beautiful place. Easy to put your camper anywhere. The views are fantastic. We visited the winery. They have some excellent wines. Get a bottle or two and enjoy the view from their patio overlooking the vineyard. You won’t find much better. We are definitely going back!

I have always wanted to stay at a dog friendly brewery with my van and two dogs. I could not have chosen a better place. The beer and food was great. There was live music on Friday night. Dogs are allowed on the patio with plenty of space. The property is beautiful and there’s a dog park within walking distance at the airport across the street. I will definitely be back on my next vacation to the U.P.
