Pyramid Alpacas is a working Huacaya farm on 25 acres in Frederick County, Virginia—about three miles east of I-81 and six miles north of historic Winchester. Since 2006 we have raised alpacas here in the northern Shenandoah Valley and opened the farm so visitors can meet the herd, follow fleece from paddock to yarn, and take something of the farm home. We are a short drive from Loudoun wine country, Skyline Drive, and Civil War sites around Winchester. The farm is home to about fifty Huacaya alpacas—the fluffy, teddy-bear type whose dense, crimped fleece stands out from the body. That crimp gives the fiber loft and warmth. It is the fleece we skirt, wash, pick, dye, card, and spin in the Fibersmith Studio. Two multi-champion herd sires anchor an active breeding program, so there are usually baby alpacas in the paddocks. If you would like a longer tie to a particular animal in the herd, ask about our alpaca sponsorship program. The Farm Store carries our own farm products and raw fleeces, along with finished alpaca apparel, home goods, and plush toys. Next door, Shenandoah Fibersmith Studio is set up for the whole fiber path: skirting tables, washer, drying racks, dying station, mill picker, carders, e-spinners, and a FeltLoom. Come for the animals, stay for the fiber, and leave with a piece of the Valley from our store. Tours are by appointment and subject to availability the date of your visit so we can give you time with the animals and the studio.
