New River Gorge and the Southern Mountains
The gorge's 876-foot bridge, world-class whitewater, and rim trails headline the new national park, with October's Bridge Day — the one day you can walk (or BASE jump) the span — as the state's signature event. Appalachian camping at its best radiates in every direction. Popular stops include Canyon Rim, Grandview, Sandstone Falls and the historic communities of Thurmond and Nuttallburg. Babcock, Hawks Nest, Pipestem and Bluestone state parks can also be included in a longer southern West Virginia route.
Greenbrier Valley and the New River
The Greenbrier Valley combines mountain scenery, farmland, historic communities and access to the Greenbrier River. Lewisburg offers restaurants, galleries, museums and a walkable downtown, while nearby communities provide access to caves, trails, state parks and scenic drives. Hinton sits where the Greenbrier and New rivers meet and makes a natural stop between Sandstone Falls, Bluestone Lake and the southern end of New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. Travelers interested in regional history can explore railroad heritage, African American history, agriculture and the communities that developed along the rivers and rail lines. Large-rig drivers should review routes carefully before entering compact downtown areas or narrow river roads.
The Potomac Highlands and Eastern Panhandle
Historic Railroad Country
West Virginia's mountain railroads connect travelers with landscapes and communities that are difficult to experience from the highway alone. Cass Scenic Railroad State Park, Durbin, Elkins and nearby towns offer scenic train excursions, museums and railroad history.
Central West Virginia and the Northern Panhandle
Hillside winery stays around Weston and glass-heritage towns pace the center, while Wheeling's Victorian streets — toy-and-train museum included — anchor the sliver between Ohio and Pennsylvania.
