TL;DR RV camping spots for the 2026 Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta fills fast. Explore Harvest Hosts stays that you can book last minute, and get practical tips for RV camping in and around the festival.
Imagine waking up before sunrise, grabbing a cup of coffee, and watching hundreds of colorful hot air balloons rise over the New Mexico landscape. That's the magic of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, one of the most spectacular events you can build an RV trip around.
Every October, RVers make their way to Albuquerque for early-morning balloon launches, evening glows, fireworks, and nine days of festivities. The event takes place at Balloon Fiesta Park in northern Albuquerque, where the 78-acre launch field becomes the center of the action.
For RV travelers, however, there's one big question to answer before you start dreaming about mass ascensions: Where are you going to camp?
The official Balloon Fiesta RV sites are extremely popular and can sell out well before the event begins. Fortunately, Albuquerque and the surrounding region offer additional options, including campgrounds, Harvest Hosts locations, and Boondockers Welcome stays.
Here's how to plan RV camping near the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta and turn the festival into an unforgettable New Mexico road trip.
When Is the 2026 Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta?
The 2026 Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta takes place October 3–11, 2026 at Balloon Fiesta Park.
The park is located north of Alameda Boulevard and about a mile west of Interstate 25. Balloon Fiesta isn't simply an event you watch from stadium seats. Visitors can walk on the launch field, experience the balloons up close, and watch crews prepare for flight.
The schedule typically includes a combination of morning and evening events, weather permitting.
Because ballooning is highly dependent on weather conditions, build some flexibility into your itinerary. Attending for multiple days gives you more opportunities to experience the balloons if weather affects a particular session.

Yes, but getting a site can be difficult. For 2026, official Balloon Fiesta RV sites are sold out, and the waitlist has been closed because of high demand.
Official RV options for the event included several categories, ranging from dry camping in the South RV Lot to premium sites overlooking the launch field. Most of the official RV camping options are dry camping. Only the premium President's Compound category lists 50-amp electrical service, water, and dump access.
The event also warns RVers that these are temporary facilities and sites may not be level. If you already secured a reservation, congratulations. You'll be staying right in the middle of the Balloon Fiesta experience. If you didn't, don't cancel your road trip just yet. There are other places to look.
Harvest Hosts Locations Near the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta
Harvest Hosts can be an especially useful tool when building a New Mexico road trip around Balloon Fiesta. There are currently more than 100 Harvest Hosts locations throughout New Mexico, including farms, wineries, breweries, attractions, and other unique places to stay. And there are Host options right in Albuquerque that you can stay at during the fiesta.
It’s important to note that Harvest Hosts locations can only offer up to five nights at a time, so don’t expect to stay at one during the entire duration of the festival. Respect your Host’s rules on the matter. If you have an All Access Membership, you can also check for availability at nearby Boondockers Welcome locations.
Starr Brothers Brewing Company
The closest Harvest Hosts location to the Balloon Fiesta is Starr Brothers Brewing Company. For the 2026, they are fully booked on most days of the Balloon Fiesta. Starr Brothers is one of the most popular Host locations in New Mexico, and is known for their craft beers and their award-winning Starr Burger, but they have a full restaurant menu. If you stay here, be sure to show appreciation to your Host by purchasing something at the brewery.
The next closest Host, Kaktus Brewing Company, also has only limited availability left during the festival. They are known for their Huali Lager, the first fortified craft beer, packed with electrolytes and antioxidants. They also have a pizza menu and live music. During your stay, be sure to show appreciation to your Host by purchasing something.
Sonia Luevano is an award-winning artist with an art gallery right in Albuquerque! The art gallery is within a Victorian house that sits on two acres of land. She will have Balloon Fiesta Art Prints for sale, in addition to several original art pieces for sale. If you’re not interested in buying art, you can offer a donation as a way to say thank you! Sonia still has many spots available during the 2026 Balloon Fiesta, but can only accommodate rigs up to 35 feet.
One under-utilized type of Host location is houses of worship. Although they usually don’t have anything for sale, you can often find churches as part of the “attractions” category on the Harvest Hosts map. They allow Harvest Hosts members to stay in exchange for a donation to the church.
The Sandia Valley Church of the Nazarene happens to have 30A electric hookups, and has availability during most of the 2026 Balloon Fiesta.
One of the biggest mistakes you can make when planning a Balloon Fiesta RV trip is limiting your search to sites immediately surrounding Balloon Fiesta Park.
This is an enormously popular event. If nearby options are unavailable, expand your search radius. Look at communities around Albuquerque and along your travel route.
You may find that spending the night farther away and driving to Balloon Fiesta Park early in the morning works better than fighting for one of the limited spaces close to the event.
Harvest Hosts specifically recommends planning months ahead for Balloon Fiesta and notes that travelers may need to base themselves farther outside Albuquerque and drive in early for the morning ascensions.
Prepare for RV Camping Near the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta
Whether you're lucky enough to have an official Fiesta RV site or you're staying at a Harvest Hosts location, be ready for the possibility of dry camping.
Before arriving, consider your:
Freshwater supply
Gray tank capacity
Black tank capacity
Battery charge
Solar setup
Generator fuel
Propane
Drinking water
Food
Don't assume hookups will be available unless your specific reservation or Host profile says they are. If you're staying several days, identify where you'll refill freshwater and empty holding tanks before you need those services.
Tip: The Harvest Hosts map does have pins that show where you can find nearby dump stations.
Prepare for Cold Mornings
New Mexico may be associated with desert landscapes, but Albuquerque sits at a significant elevation. October mornings can feel cold—especially when you're standing outside before sunrise waiting for balloons to launch, so it’s important to pack layers.
A typical Fiesta morning may require jackets, hats, and warm drinks before the weather warms up later in the day. Your RV should also be ready for changing temperatures. Check the forecast shortly before your trip and make sure your propane, batteries, and furnace are ready if colder weather arrives.
Be Ready to Wake Up Early
This is not a sleep-in vacation. Some of the Balloon Fiesta's most memorable experiences happen around sunrise.
If you're staying outside Balloon Fiesta Park, you'll also need to account for driving, parking, and event traffic. Prepare as much as possible the night before.
Set out your clothes. Pack what you need. Make coffee easy to prepare. Download directions. The fewer decisions you have to make before sunrise, the better.
Expect Traffic
Hundreds of thousands of people attend Balloon Fiesta, and all those visitors have to get to and from the event. Give yourself significantly more travel time than a normal Albuquerque drive would require.
Follow official Balloon Fiesta transportation and parking guidance rather than assuming your normal navigation app will provide the best route during major event periods.
If you're staying at a campground or Harvest Hosts location outside the immediate area, ask about local traffic patterns when appropriate.
Don't Forget Your Camera
You don't need professional photography equipment to capture incredible Balloon Fiesta images. Bring whatever camera you enjoy using—even if that's simply your phone.
Consider packing:
Extra batteries
Portable battery bank
Extra memory cards
Lens cloth
Small camera bag
And remember to occasionally put the camera away. Watching hundreds of balloons fill the New Mexico sky is one of those experiences worth seeing with your own eyes, too.
