OPENING SOON..WATCH FOR UPDATED AVAILABILITY In August 2021, a group of friends and family composed of Michigan Tech alumni, Eagle Scouts, environmental engineers, outdoors enthusiasts, and history nerds purchased the former Calumet Air Force Station from Keweenaw County with the goal of saving the structures, restoring the property, and opening it up to the public. The group chose to name this endeavor the Open Skies Project in reference to the Treaty on Open Skies, an agreement between NATO and Warsaw Pact nations at the end of the Cold War that allowed for surveillance of each other's military bases. The name seemed very fitting, as the goal is to open this military station to public viewing once again! Enjoy this Historic site with the highest elevation in the Keweenaw Peninsula. Free guided tours are included if you stay on a Wednesday or Saturday. We are on 100 acres with over 70 original buildings standing including a 100+ person bomb shelter to the highest radar platform to view 3 sides of Lake Superior. We have very limited lighting so are night Skies are like no other. We have all kinds of wildlife and one of the best fishing lakes 2 miles away. We are the perfect stay in the middle of the Keweenaw Peninsula.
