Illinois RV Camping Guide

Chicagoland and Northern Illinois

Harvest Hosts ring the metro at a comfortable distance, making them the easiest way to visit Chicago by RV: stay overnight outside the city, then take Metra or drive in. Beyond the suburbs, Starved Rock State Park's sandstone canyons, the Mississippi River bluffs around Galena, and the Rock River valley showcase a side of Illinois many travelers never expect.

Central Illinois and Route 66

The Illinois stretch of Historic Route 66 runs past Springfield's Lincoln sites, Pontiac's colorful Route 66 murals, vintage diners, giant roadside attractions, and farm and winery stays that create a natural overnight rhythm on the drive toward Missouri.

Southern Illinois and the Shawnee Hills

The state's best-kept secret is the Shawnee Hills. The Shawnee Hills Wine Trail winds through rolling hills and forested bluffs between the Mississippi and Ohio rivers, with Garden of the Gods' dramatic sandstone overlooks nearby. It feels closer to Kentucky than to downtown Chicago — because it is.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to RV camp in Illinois?

May through October, with October the sleeper pick — harvest festivals at farm hosts, fall color in the Shawnee Hills, and comfortable temperatures statewide. Summer is prime for lake country up north; spring brings green and mud in roughly equal measure.

Is overnight RV parking legal in Illinois?

Chicagoland enforces parking restrictions aggressively, and rules vary town by town elsewhere. Harvest Hosts stays settle it: you're an invited guest on private property with the host's permission — a vineyard instead of a violation.

How does RV camping at Harvest Hosts work in Illinois?

Harvest Hosts is an annual membership that lets RVers stay overnight at 215 Illinois wineries, farms, breweries, and attractions with no camping fees. Members request stays through the app, arrive in a self-contained RV, and support their hosts with a purchase — a bottle of Shawnee Hills wine, a farm-restaurant dinner, or market produce.

What's the best way to visit Chicago in an RV?

Avoid driving into downtown if you can. Stay overnight at a Harvest Hosts location outside the city, then use Metra or a park-and-ride to explore Chicago. Lake Shore Drive restricts trucks and many RVs, older neighborhoods have low railroad viaducts, and street parking for large RVs is extremely limited.

Do I need to worry about tolls driving through Illinois?

Only if your route touches the Chicago metro — the Illinois Tollway (I-90, I-88, I-294, I-355) is fully cashless, with no coin baskets or booths to stop at. The cheapest way to pay is an I-PASS or any E-ZPass transponder; they're interoperable and run about half the plate rate. No transponder? Pay online by license plate within 14 days of your trip to avoid fines. Tolls are charged by axle, so a big rig or anything you're towing costs more than a car. Good news for road-trippers: the downstate routes most RVers use, like I-55 along Route 66, I-70, and I-74, are toll-free. Tolls are a northern-Illinois thing.

Can I RV Historic Route 66 through Illinois?

Absolutely. Illinois marks the eastern beginning of Historic Route 66, with classic diners, vintage gas stations, roadside attractions, and small towns stretching from the Chicago area to the Mississippi River. Harvest Hosts provides convenient overnight stops along the way, making it easy to experience the route over several days.

Can I use Harvest Hosts in Illinois during winter?

Many wineries, breweries, and attractions welcome RVers year-round, while some farms pause overnight stays after the growing season ends. Illinois winters can be cold and windy, but major highways are generally well maintained. Winterize your RV and check each host's listing for seasonal availability before you travel.

Is Harvest Hosts worth it for Illinois RV trips?

Yes — the $99/year Classic membership pays for itself in 2–3 nights versus private campgrounds at $35–55/night. Whether you're crossing Illinois on I-80, I-70, or Historic Route 66, or exploring destinations like Galena, Starved Rock, and the Shawnee Hills, Harvest Hosts offers memorable places to stop while supporting local businesses.

RV Camping in Illinois

4.9 Rating·18,273 Reviews

Illinois has 215 Harvest Hosts locations offering overnight RV stays at wineries, farms, breweries, and attractions — and far more variety than its interstate reputation suggests. Beyond Chicago, the state stretches through Route 66 towns, river bluffs, and a southern wine region with genuine hill country. Member-favorite stops include Rustic Illinois Winery Retreat — a host so beloved we profiled it on the blog — plus Historic Barn Farm Restaurant Retreat and Scenic Midwest Winery Retreat, the state's three most-booked hosts. Members can choose from 49 farm stays, 34 wineries, and 19 breweries statewide.

Nice place to stay, we enjoy it very much. We had lunch here, it was good and my husband tried their wine, it was enjoyable. We like the atmosphere the most! Area has a beautiful flower garden with gazebo with the vineyard on the back, absolutely gorgeous area to relax and have some vine. Very large area to park if you’re a big RV.

This was a wonderful choice for an overnight stay! The parking lot was huge. We parked by the edge next to the flowers and a corn field. The owner and patrons were so friendly! We had our Great Dane Tiger along and he thought he was a rockstar with all the loving he got. Lots of fun things happening too. We will stay again if we can!

Farm stay at Picturesque Apple Orchard Farm

Upon arrival we were greeted by 3 young ladies with smiles as wide as the orchard. They presented our preordered donuts and box of yumminess was a sight to be had. (Sorry I forgot to take a picture). Beyond the donuts, the shop was loaded with meats, cheeses, desserts and more. The lot to park for the night was level and fit our needs. We enjoyed the cows at dusk as they came in from the pasture. Would love to visit during apple picking season, the orchard looked full of beautifully ripening apples.

Staff was super polite and explained everything that I needed. Beautiful views across the fields. If there early don’t worry about traffic noise it quiets down after dark. Last my wife could not get enough watching the goats. Lucky for them they were in pens or they would have taken a ride in our camper.

After a hectic and very hot trip, this was a beautiful and peaceful respite. We were able to keep the windows and door open and stay cool. Our dogs were in heaven and the landscaping was breathtaking. The store was fantastic and I could have looked through everything for hours. Very wonderful hosts. We will definitely come back!

With water and electricity and a nice place to walk my dogs it was a perfect spot for the night. You can walk around the back by a nice pond. Tons of birds around, which was fun to listen to. See my pictures of that. Also super friendly hosts, it was a pleasure talking with them. I’m also impressed by the flowers that they grow, and will very likely buy some for my garden!
