Iowa RV Camping Guide

Western Iowa and the Loess Hills

The Loess Hills rise along the Missouri River in landforms found almost nowhere else on Earth, threaded by a scenic byway that makes western Iowa one of the state's most scenic destinations for RV camping. Farm stays here offer sweeping prairie views, peaceful countryside, and easy access to Nebraska just across the Missouri River.

Central Iowa

Des Moines anchors the I-80/I-35 crossroads with a farmers-market-and-craft-beer scene that outperforms its size, plus living-history and distillery stays close by. Visit in August for the famous Iowa State Fair, or make Central Iowa part of a Midwest RV road trip while enjoying overnight RV stays beyond traditional Iowa campgrounds and RV parks.

Eastern Iowa and the Mississippi River

The Great River Road follows the Mississippi River from Dubuque past the Quad Cities, with the historic Amana Colonies and the iconic Field of Dreams nearby. This region is one of the most popular areas for RV camping in Iowa, with scenic drives, river towns and unique overnight stays near Dubuque, Davenport, and the Quad Cities. River-town stays pair with fall color along the bluffs in mid-October, and Illinois sits just across the water.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to RV camp in Iowa?

May through October is the most popular season for RV camping in Iowa. Late summer brings sweet corn at its peak and the Iowa State Fair, while fall offers harvest festivals, apple orchards, and colorful drives along the Mississippi River bluffs. Spring is beautiful but can bring severe weather, so monitor forecasts and weather alerts between April and June.

Is overnight RV parking legal in Iowa?

It varies by town, and many interstate rest areas and parking lots restrict overnight parking. Harvest Hosts removes the guesswork by connecting members with private property owners who welcome self-contained RVs for overnight stays.

How does RV camping at Harvest Hosts work in Iowa?

Harvest Hosts is an annual membership that lets RVers stay overnight at 156 Iowa farms, wineries, distilleries, and attractions with no camping fees. Members request stays through the app, arrive in a self-contained RV, and support their hosts with a purchase — small-batch bourbon, alpaca-wool goods, sweet corn by the dozen or other locally made goods.

What should I know about severe weather in Iowa?

Spring and early summer bring real thunderstorm and tornado risk. Know your host's shelter options when you arrive, keep phone alerts on, and don't ride out a warning in the rig. The other 300 days a year, Iowa weather is as friendly as its people.

Can I use Harvest Hosts in Iowa during winter?

Distilleries, wineries, and attractions often remain open year-round, while many farms close after harvest season. Winter camping is possible for travelers with properly winterized RVs, and major highways like I-80 are typically well maintained.

Is Harvest Hosts worth it for Iowa RV trips?

Yes. The $99/year Classic membership typically pays for itself in just 2 to 3 nights. Because Iowa sits along the heavily traveled I-80 corridor, it's one of the most popular Harvest Hosts states for cross-country RV travelers looking for unique alternatives to traditional RV parks and campgrounds.

Excellent stay at this charming little airpark! Our host was incredibly gracious and took the time to give us a tour of the property. Learning about the rich history of the airpark made our visit even more enjoyable. It was a wonderful experience, and we would definitely stay here again whenever we’re in the area.

We arrived during business hours and found our setup to be a breeze. The 30amp service was accessible. Nice shady spot for our rig during a heat spell. Our hosts were very friendly and the wine choices were spectacular. Their restaurant provided great food and charming atmosphere. Thank you again for our pleasant stay.

Host responded right away to request. Directions were very clear and it was an easy in and out without having to disconnect our toad. Amazing store to stock up on veggies and meat as well as indulge in some wonderful items we didn’t know we needed. Ice cream flavors were unique and delicious. My wife enjoyed the vegan (non-dairy) options - strawberry hibiscus and mango tajin while I devoured the rootbeer float ice cream. So many unique bratwurst options - we are eager to partake of the sweet chili and cherry cayenne brats. We purchased some unique salsa and jam flavors we are looking forward to enjoying with friends and family. We will definitely stay here again if our travels bring us back to this area.

We will never forget our stay at Pivo Brewery. We arrived just as the tornado sirens went off and were escorted to the basement. They were nice enough to give a pivo (beer) for the short time we were there until the warning was lifted. The beer was good, the food was good and everyone was really friendly. We had plenty of room to park. Sad they may be closing as it’s an excellent harvest host stay.

This place is beautiful and unique. I would love to come back this way just for the beauty of the property but also because we were so quick in and out we didn’t get a chance to meet the alpacas. The sites were well spaced from each other with plenty of room for adventure. Our kids and animals really appreciated the land. The host was super responsive!

Wonderful stop and would have loved to have had the ability to spend a little longer there to take advantage for some of their art classes. The host was understanding of our ever changing arrival times due to traveling with young children.

Farm stay at Idyllic Elk Farm & Swan Refuge

Jean A

We enjoyed our stay at the Elk Farm. We arrived at the office (which is at a different location) and were escorted over to the area where we were to camp. The location is gorgeous! There is a cabin on a tiny island with a crossover bridge for access. There is an area for parking for cars and large rigs available, and because that area was taken, we parked on the path that went around the lake. The place was very quiet and private, though an interstate does go by fairly close, the noise from that did not bother us. The next morning we were given a tour of the Elk Farm pastures and got to watch as the elks were fed. We learned a little about their farm, but also about their efforts to bring Trumpeter Swans back into areas of the United States they have not been in for years. And we were thrilled to even get to see a family of swans on the lake while we camped. We certainly were excited to see them! We cannot wait to fix the meat that we purchased. We definitely felt it was a great experience staying there!

Parking is in a concrete parking lot with trees surrounding. Loved the tractor that drove through in the early evening with families laughing and waving hello! Would definitely return.
