Kansas RV Camping Guide

Eastern Kansas and the Flint Hills

The Kansas City metro's brewery scene gives way fast to the Flint Hills, the largest intact tallgrass prairie left in North America — genuinely moving country at sunrise and sunset. Eastern Kansas hosts cluster around Topeka, Lawrence, and the I-35 corridor toward Missouri and Oklahoma.

Central Kansas

Wichita anchors the south, while the I-70 corridor through Salina and Hays strings together winery stays, the missile silo, and Old West history at Abilene and Dodge City to the southwest. Fall brings prairie gold and cottonwood color along the rivers.

Western Kansas and the High Plains

The land climbs quietly toward Colorado, past Monument Rocks' chalk formations and skies built for stargazing. Hosts are sparser out here, which makes each one a better story — plan fuel and overnight stops with High Plains distances in mind.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to RV camp in Kansas?

April–June and September–October are the sweet spots — spring green in the Flint Hills, mild fall days, and harvest energy at farm hosts. Summer works with air conditioning and morning drives; it also brings the wheat harvest, a spectacle in its own right.

How windy is Kansas for RV driving, really?

Windy enough to respect. Sustained prairie crosswinds are routine, and high-profile rigs should slow down, grip with both hands, and consider waiting out red-flag days — especially on north–south routes. Morning hours are typically calmer than afternoons.

Is overnight RV parking legal in Kansas?

Rules vary by city, and interstate-exit lots are increasingly posted. Harvest Hosts stays solve it with an invitation: private property, host's permission, and a Kansas sunset thrown in.

How does RV camping at Harvest Hosts work in Kansas?

Harvest Hosts is an annual membership that lets RVers stay overnight at 128 Kansas wineries, farms, breweries, and attractions with no camping fees. Members request stays through the app, arrive in a self-contained RV, and support their hosts with a purchase — prairie wine, live-music brews, or a silo tour you'll retell for years.

What about tornado season?

Late spring is peak severe-weather season on the plains. Keep alerts on, ask your host about shelter when you arrive, and never ride out a warning in the RV. Storm risk is real but manageable with basic habits — and the post-storm skies are unforgettable.

Is Harvest Hosts worth it for Kansas RV trips?

Yes — the $99/year Classic membership pays for itself in 2–3 nights, and every I-70 crossing banks value. Trading a truck-stop night for a winery or a missile silo is the easiest argument the membership makes.

RV Camping in Kansas

4.9 Rating·10,763 Reviews

Kansas has 128 Harvest Hosts locations offering overnight RV stays at wineries, farms, breweries, and attractions — including what may be the network's most unusual host anywhere: a converted Atlas missile silo. Between the Flint Hills' tallgrass prairie and sunsets that use the whole sky, Kansas rewards RVers who get off I-70 as much as it serves the ones crossing on it. Member-favorite stops include Countryside Winery Retreat, Missile Silo Adventure Resort, and Rustic Microbrewery with Live Music — the state's three most-booked hosts. Members can choose from 38 farm stays, 9 wineries, and 8 breweries statewide.

We enjoyed our stay at Sugar Hills. The spot was easy to get to from the highway and provided plenty of room for our 45' RV.

Very nice spot. Host were fantastic and so were the wines. Once to the entrance, parking was easy. Gravel pads were hidden in the grass. Very quiet with nice views. We chose power hook ups due to the heat. Was treated like old friends that stopped by for a visit. Loved the story of their business. Dirt road going in had just been groomed and was soft. Rainfall would have made for an interesting ride. Do suggest calling ahead to check on roads if it has been raining.

Off the beaten path, serene and beautiful place to park. Property is well set up for RV camping, next to a beautiful pond and bridge. Our hosts were so welcoming and the wine tasting was amazing, it was hard to decide which wine I liked the most! It was a peaceful nights rest, and such a nice place to wake up in the morning! Will definitely stop in again if we are in the area.

Farm stay at Peaceful Prairie Greenhouse Garden Center

Upon arrival, a staff member was mowing the property, stopped to ask us where we wanted to park our rig and said he will mow it first to accommodate us, fantastic!!! The owner came out to greet us and gave us all the important information, where town and food was located. Went inside the greenhouse to shop and bought a couple plants, as we were checking out, we were offered recently picked sweet and hot peppers free of charge. Grilled them up that night with dinner and they were wonderful. The spot under the big tree provided great shade and the views were wonderful. 10/10 would stay again!
