Louisiana RV Camping Guide

New Orleans and the River Road

Hosts outside the city solve the New Orleans RV problem — overnight along the River Road's oak alleys and historic estates, then day-trip into the French Quarter. Music, gumbo, and beignets fill your stomach and your soul. October through April is the season; the food is year-round.

Cajun Country

Lafayette and the Atchafalaya Basin are the heart of it: crawfish boils, dance halls, swamp tours, and a slower Louisiana worth lingering in. Brewery and farm stays here come with the best eating radius in American RV travel. Be sure to adventure into the country for scenic bayous and walks among the cypress trees. I-10 continues west into Texas and into more culinary delights.

North Louisiana

The piney hills around Monroe and Ruston feel more Delta South than bayou, full of artistic flair with a Southern twist. With vineyard stays, fall color in the uplands, and easy I-20 pulls toward Mississippi or Arkansas, Northern Louisiana gives you a different taste of the Pelican State.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to RV camp in Louisiana?

October through April — mild, festive, and mostly dry. Mardi Gras season (January–February) and festival spring (Jazz Fest, crawfish season) are the cultural peaks; summer is hot, humid, and thundery. Hurricane season peaks August–October, so build flexibility into late-summer coastal plans.

Should I RV to Mardi Gras?

It's doable with strategy: stay at hosts well outside the parade zones, arrive days early, and treat the rig as base camp rather than transportation. Smaller-city celebrations — Lafayette, Houma, Lake Charles — deliver the culture with a fraction of the logistics.

Is overnight RV parking legal in Louisiana?

Rules vary by parish (i.e. county) and city, and New Orleans enforces actively. Harvest Hosts stays settle it: an invited overnight on private property with the host's permission — under live oaks instead of streetlights.

How does RV camping at Harvest Hosts work in Louisiana?

Harvest Hosts is an annual membership that lets RVers stay overnight at 69 Louisiana vineyards, breweries, farms, and attractions with no camping fees. Members request stays through the app, arrive in a self-contained RV, and support their hosts with a purchase — muscadine wine, a po'boy and a pint, or an estate garden tour.

Can I use Harvest Hosts in Louisiana during winter?

Yes — winter is Louisiana's prime RV season, and hosts stay active year-round. It's a legitimate snowbird alternative: mild Gulf air, festival season ramping up, and none of Florida's booking crunch.

Is Harvest Hosts worth it for Louisiana RV trips?

Yes — the $99/year Classic membership pays for itself in 2–3 nights versus private campgrounds. Factor in what you'd spend on restaurants anyway and Louisiana hosts are the rare stop where the "support your host" purchase was always the plan.
