Minnesota RV Camping Guide

The North Shore and Duluth

Highway 61 hugs Lake Superior for 150 miles of waterfalls, lighthouses, and state parks — Minnesota's signature drive, at its peak in late September color. Duluth's harbor and brewery scene anchor the southern end; plan ahead for fall weekends.

The Twin Cities and St. Croix Valley

Minneapolis–St. Paul offers big-city stops with host stays in the surrounding farm and river country, including the St. Croix's bluff towns shared with Wisconsin. The State Fair (late August) is a Minnesota institution worth routing around — or into.

Southern Minnesota

The Minnesota River valley and bluff country hold the state's vineyard heartland — cold-hardy grapes bred at the U of M make genuinely Minnesotan wine — plus main-street brewery stays in towns that still have main streets. Iowa sits an easy hop south.

Lake Country and the West

Brainerd, Alexandria, and Detroit Lakes carry the classic cabin-country summer, while the Red River Valley's brewery stays serve I-94 travelers heading toward North Dakota.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to RV camp in Minnesota?

June through September, with late September a North Shore secret — peak color, cool air, and open stay requests. Summer lake season is glorious and busy; May and early June bring fewer people and, fair warning, the year's most motivated mosquitoes near water.

Is overnight RV parking legal in Minnesota?

It varies by city, and the Twin Cities metro plus tourist corridors post restrictions. Harvest Hosts stays skip the question: an invited overnight on private property with the host's permission — a vineyard row over a frontage road.

How does RV camping at Harvest Hosts work in Minnesota?

Harvest Hosts is an annual membership that lets RVers stay overnight at 208 Minnesota vineyards, breweries, farms, and attractions with no camping fees. Members request stays through the app, arrive in a self-contained RV, and support their hosts with a purchase — cold-climate wine, a main-street flight, or farm goods for the road.

Is Minnesota wine actually good?

Surprisingly serious — University of Minnesota-bred cold-hardy grapes like Marquette and Frontenac built a real industry here, and lakeside tasting rooms make the case better than any argument. Come skeptical, leave with a case.

Can I use Harvest Hosts in Minnesota during winter?

Breweries and attractions often welcome winterized rigs year-round — Minnesotans don't hide from winter, and hardy RVers are welcome to join in. Farm and vineyard hosts typically pause; check each host's page and bring genuine cold-weather readiness.

Is Harvest Hosts worth it for Minnesota RV trips?

Yes — the $99/year Classic membership pays for itself in 2–3 nights versus private campgrounds at $35–55/night, and lake-country campgrounds book solid on summer weekends. Host stays add the flexibility the reservation calendar took away.

RV Camping in Minnesota

4.9 Rating·10,171 Reviews

Minnesota has 208 Harvest Hosts locations offering overnight RV stays at lakeside vineyards, small-town breweries, and farms across the Land of 10,000 Lakes — which undersells it by about 1,800 lakes. From the North Shore's Superior cliffs to prairie wine country in the southwest, Minnesota summers were built for RVs and Minnesotans know it. Member-favorite stops include Scenic Lakeside Vineyard Retreat, Small Family-Run Craft Brewery, and Historic Main Street Craft Brewery — the state's three most-booked hosts, one of which we've profiled on the blog. Members can choose from 56 farm stays, 14 wineries, and 10 breweries statewide.

Wehad a wonderful time at the Honeyberry farm. We arrived mid afternoon and sat outside for a while relaxing and reading a book. we then walked up to the house and had a wonderful visit with our host. we picked raspberries and bought jam and elderberry syrup and frozen honey berries which we are still enjoying every morning for breakfast. we were also told to go and see the Headwaters of the Mississippi riverat Itasca state park. this we did the next day and would recommend visiting as well. thank you for the suggestion and yes we walked through the Mississippi river. we would definitely recommend this place for one or more nights stay.

Lovely place to stay and they take their camp sites seriously. Lower pull up has built in patio, both are level and overlook the vineyards. Wine tasting was a lot of fun and had board games to play with the kids. Host is friendly, accommodating and has lots of stories to share. Our stay was Silent and scenic, even on the rainy day we arrived. Lovely property and would highly recommend staying here!

Farm stay at Family-Run Farmstead with Market & Trails

This was a great stop for the night and the farm stand had a nice selection of meats, honey, eggs, butter, etc. We made our purchase and went to our camper to enjoy our evening. We took a nice walk along the edge of the corn and soybean fields and enjoyed being outdoors. We were able to talk with a family that were here to partake of the U-Pick corn and we would have enjoyed that, but in our RV we just didn't have enough room to do canning. We will stop here again should our travels bring us this way in the future.

Big parking area with plenty of room for motorhome and towed vehicle. Far enough away from clubhouse that we were not bothered by activity. In fact, went into clubhouse to chat with owners and have a beverage. In the morning a mother deer and fawn came out to see us off.

This is a beautiful site! Set apart, so it is very private and quiet. The site is long and level. We did not have to unhook our 45 foot fifth wheel. There was some shade. The host was great at communicating. I would highly recommend this site! I bet it is beautiful in the fall with the leaf changes.

I wish I could have stayed here an extra day and the weather was cooperating because the boat rentals and the other services seem to be an amazing way to explore and fish here. Added bonus. The bar/restaurant next door is amazing. Had walleye for the first time. Now I must catch some lol

Attraction stay at Charming Northern Candy Store Retreat

We had the whole place to ourselves once the last customers left @8:00pm. Plenty of parking space. We made several purchases in the store. The night sky was so pretty. It was a peaceful night. If you park near the highway, you will hear lots of cars, trucks and motorcycles. That’s where we first parked, but we opted to pull over to the other side of the parking lot. It was perfect ;) Our puppy loved the room to run. We also walked the wooded trail to count the lollipops.

We enjoyed our quiet evening at Champion Valley. The place was ours after closing time so we just sat outside and watched the rabbits munch on grass around our trailer.

We found the place very easily, pulled into the fenced area and parked with ease. Accommodation for our extra canoe trailer was easily met. The bar and grill served good food and seems like a hopping place. Very friendly and highly recommended. Next time we’ll try to schedule when there’s horses about.
