North Carolina RV Camping Guide

The Blue Ridge and Yadkin Valley

The Blue Ridge Mountains are North Carolina's signature RV destination, from Asheville's nationally recognized brewery scene to the waterfalls and overlooks of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Nearby, the Yadkin Valley's vineyard country and Mount Airy's Mayberry charm make easy overnight stops between mountain adventures. Fall brings some of the East Coast's best foliage, while spring fills the mountains with blooming rhododendrons and wildflowers.

The Piedmont and Triangle

Raleigh-Durham, Greensboro, and Charlotte string a brewery bench deep enough for its own beer month, with revived mill campuses turning textile history into taproom campuses. Convenient interstate routes along I-40, I-85, and I-77 make it easy to string together Harvest Hosts stays while exploring the state's urban heart.

The Coast and Outer Banks

From Cape Hatteras National Seashore to Corolla's wild horses, North Carolina's coast offers some of the country's most distinctive beach driving and lighthouse scenery. Ferries connect the Outer Banks with Ocracoke Island and the mainland, while farms, wineries, and distilleries inland provide convenient overnight stops before or after your coastal adventure. If you're traveling from late summer into early fall, keep an eye on hurricane forecasts before heading to the coast.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to RV camp in North Carolina?

Spring and fall are ideal across most of the state. April through June offers comfortable temperatures, blooming wildflowers, and fewer crowds, while October is the most popular month for mountain RV trips thanks to spectacular Blue Ridge fall color. Summer is perfect for escaping the heat in the mountains or heading to the beaches, while coastal travelers should monitor hurricane forecasts from August through October.

Can I drive my RV on the Blue Ridge Parkway?

Yes. RVs are welcome on the Blue Ridge Parkway, but taller rigs should plan carefully. Several tunnels — primarily south of Asheville — have height restrictions, and the National Park Service publishes current tunnel clearances. The Parkway is designed for scenic travel rather than speed, with a 45 mph limit, countless overlooks, and no fuel stations along the route, so plan fuel stops before entering.

Is the Blue Ridge Parkway open year-round?

Mostly — but weather can temporarily close sections, especially during winter and after storms. Closures are common at higher elevations because of snow, ice, fallen trees, or maintenance, so it's worth checking current road conditions before setting out.

How do the Outer Banks ferries work for RVs?

State-run ferries connect Hatteras, Ocracoke, and the mainland, and they carry RVs. The Hatteras–Ocracoke run is free and first-come — no reservations, so arrive early in summer. The longer mainland routes from Cedar Island and Swan Quarter are tolled by vehicle length and take reservations up to 90 days out, worth grabbing for summer. Best boat ride in the South either way.

Is overnight RV parking legal in North Carolina?

Rules vary by municipality, with beach towns and Asheville enforcing actively. Harvest Hosts stays keep it clean: an invited overnight on private property with the host's permission — riverfront, if you pick the distillery.

How does RV camping at Harvest Hosts work in North Carolina?

Harvest Hosts is an annual membership that lets RVers stay overnight at 352 North Carolina distilleries, breweries, wineries, and farms with no camping fees. Members request stays through the app, arrive in a self-contained RV, and support their hosts with a purchase — small-batch whiskey, a Yadkin Valley red, or dinner on a historic mill campus.

Is Harvest Hosts worth it for North Carolina RV trips?

Yes — mountain and beach campgrounds run $45–75/night in season and October books out, so the $99/year Classic membership pays for itself in about two nights. A single Parkway-plus-Yadkin loop covers it easily.

Our favorite place so far! Friendly people, easy access and you have to try the fried brussel sprouts! There is construction nearby but it didn’t impact us all. We will be back for sure.

Farm stay at Pecan Grove Pine Straw Farm Retreat

STEVE M

We pulled in and were immediately met by the host, she told us where to park (which is clearly labeled). We parked and had a nice conversation with them, they are just a delightful couple. We had a nice, quiet night and then pulled out in the morning. It's just a few miles off of I95, very easy to get to. The parking area is large, flat, plainly marked, and large enough for big rigs. Our setup ia 60 feet long and there was zero concerns. The parking is hard packed grass, no problems with that either. We really enjoyed our night there.

Perfect place to camp for the night before heading out to pick up our granddaughter at camp. We were the only ones camping this night. Very quiet restful evening. Enjoyed arriving and going in to get a cool drink at the bar on this very hot July day. Purchased some of their Vodka to keep at our second home in Florida.
