Texas RV Camping Guide

The Hill Country and Central Texas

Fredericksburg's Wine Road 290 is now one of America's most-visited wine regions, with central Texas host stays spreading through Austin's orbit, spring bluebonnet country, and rivers made for floating. Peak wildflowers hit late March through April.

The Gulf Coast

From Galveston down the barrier islands to Padre, the Texas coast runs 350 miles of birding flats, shrimp docks, and warm-water winters — a snowbird migration all its own. Hurricane awareness applies June–November.

West Texas and Big Bend Country

Big Bend's desert mountains, Marfa's art-and-lights mystique, and vineyard stays under enormous skies reward the state's longest drives. Fuel discipline is real out here — top off at every town.

The Panhandle and Canyon Country

Palo Duro Canyon — the nation's second-largest — drops out of the plains near Amarillo, with canyon-rim winery stays and Cadillac Ranch's spray-paint pilgrimage on old Route 66 toward New Mexico.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to RV camp in Texas?

October through April for most of the state — mild Hill Country days, warm Gulf winters, and fall-through-spring comfort in the west. Late March–April adds bluebonnets; summer is a heat commitment best made near water or at elevation.

How do I plan around Texas distances?

Believe the map. Cross-state drives run 10–12 hours, so treat Texas as several trips: a Hill Country loop, a coast run, a Big Bend expedition. Host stays every 200–300 miles turn the scale from obstacle into itinerary.

Is overnight RV parking legal in Texas?

Rules vary by city, and metro and beach-town lots increasingly post against it. Harvest Hosts stays settle it Texas-style: an invited overnight on private property with the host's permission — a canyon-rim vineyard over a frontage road.

How does RV camping at Harvest Hosts work in Texas?

Harvest Hosts is an annual membership that lets RVers stay overnight at 443 Texas wineries, farms, breweries, and attractions with no camping fees. Members request stays through the app, arrive in a self-contained RV, and support their hosts with a purchase — a Hill Country tempranillo, Gulf shrimp dinner, or ranch beef for the freezer.

Is Texas wine for real?

Fifth-largest producing state and climbing — the High Plains grow most of the grapes, the Hill Country pours most of the tastings, and heat-loving varieties like tempranillo and viognier found a genuine home. The top of the Texas host leaderboard is all wineries for a reason.

Is Harvest Hosts worth it for Texas RV trips?

Yes — the $99/year Classic membership pays for itself in 2–3 nights, and Texas's size means members bank more host nights here than almost anywhere. One Hill Country weekend typically covers the year.

Do I need to worry about toll roads in Texas?

Yes, in the big metros. Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, and Houston all have extensive toll road networks (NTTA, TxDOT managed lanes, HCTRA), and most are cashless — cameras read your plate and mail a bill if you don't have a toll tag. Rural highways and Farm-to-Market roads are toll-free, so routing around metro tollways is easy if you'd rather not deal with it.

RV Camping in Texas

4.9 Rating·36,827 Reviews

Texas is less a state than a small continent — El Paso sits closer to San Diego than to Houston — and its host network sprawls to match, from Hill Country wine roads to Gulf shrimp towns to Panhandle canyon rims. Texas has 443 Harvest Hosts locations offering overnight RV stays across it all, and the top of the leaderboard says everything about Texas wine's rise: the three most-booked hosts are all wineries — Bar Z Winery, Frascone Winery (toured on our blog), and Oswald Vineyard. Members can choose from 108 farm stays, 62 wineries, and 30 breweries statewide.

Winery stay at Basque Heritage Vineyard Retreat

This winery is a true gem, beautiful location. Rest your rig right in the middle of a grassy lane surrounded by vines. The wine tasting and adjoining restaurant was the “cherry on top” of our stay.

We arrived a little late (30 min before closing)because of bad weather but they still accommodated us with food and wine! Very friendly owner and staff. Beautiful building and property. We were the only ones there for the night and parked up on the hill overlooking the lake/pond. Lots of wildlife on the water. We had pizza and watermelon and pomegranate slushies😋 We would absolutely come back.

Great communication leading up to, as we arrived and during our stay. Such a wonderful place to stay the night! We (and our pets) absolutely loved the animals, and beautiful Texas views. Easy to find, level spot and we also very much appreciated having 50 amp electricity hookups for our ac’s! Thank you so much for hosting, we’ll return when in the area!
