RV Camping in Virginia

4.9 Rating·29,438 Reviews

Virginia has been hosting travelers since 1607, and it shows: presidential estates with vineyards, a 105-mile national park drive down Skyline Drive, and one of the East's most accomplished wine industries. Virginia has 255 Harvest Hosts locations offering overnight RV stays at country wineries, heritage markets, and inns older than the republic. Member-favorite stops include Scenic Virginia Country Winery Retreat, Rustic Amish-Style Country Marketplace, and Historic 18th-Century Inn RV Stop — the state's three most-booked hosts. Members can choose from 59 farm stays, 38 wineries, and 30 breweries statewide.

This was at least my third stay, and it was wonderful as always. Happy they now have food! The staff is wonderful and the wines excellent. Very quiet stay out in the vineyard, and had a great time at the Virginia Ren Fest.

What a wonderful little place. It was beautiful and peaceful here, and the hosts were very welcoming. The wine was perfect, and our favorite was the sparkling wine. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would gladly return on our next pass through. Truly a slice of heaven.

It was just me and my two teenage boys for the weekend, we really enjoyed the privacy, solo stove, and plenty of space to pass around the lacrosse ball. The view of the beautiful horses was an added bonus for sure.

This Harvest Host was very a very convenient stop on our backroads tour. The surprise was the awesome market. In the middle of nowhere-tiny-town-USA this adorable market, full of healthy choices, was an unexpected gem. Great stop even if you don’t spend the night.

Farm stay at Harvest Hosts Farm

The view is truly picturesque! It looks like a postcard. This is the perfect Harvest Host setting with a nice walking trail around the property. The site is on the left side of the barn overlooking the mountains and a large field. The parking pad is a work in progress. We were the second Harvest Host stay. The host is wonderful and planning to rework the parking pad to make set up easier. Here are a few notes which you may want to know when you stay: 1. Arrive from Ararat Highway (not from the Blue Ridge Parkway) especially if yiu have a larger camper. We have a 27’ Globetrotter. 2. There is no cell service. We have Verizon. 3. Power and water are available but depending on your camper, it may be 45-50 feet to access the hook ups (which was our experience). This is such an amazing property in the middle of the NC mountains. We enjoyed our stay.

We rolled in and found the 50amp hookup right away. The pastor stopped by to make sure we were not in need of anything. It was a very quiet spot and we will definitely stop here again!

What a beautiful and well taken care of property and wonderful people! We loved our stay and spent time watching the cows, going for walks, and seeing the fireflies before it got dark.

Virginia RV Camping Guide

NOVA

Loudoun County's wine trail — more tasting rooms than anywhere else in the Commonwealth — has earned it the nickname "DC's Wine Country," with Middleburg's horse-country estates and Leesburg's colonial-era downtown rounding out the hunt-country feel. Alexandria's Old Town waterfront and the Manassas battlefields sit closer to the District, while the Potomac corridor keeps Great Falls and Mount Vernon within easy reach of Virginia's Piedmont wineries.

The Shenandoah Valley and Blue Ridge

Skyline Drive rides the ridgeline through Shenandoah National Park, with valley towns — Winchester, Harrisonburg, Staunton — stringing heritage markets and historic inns below. October along the Blue Ridge is the mid-Atlantic's headline act, and the Appalachian corridor continues south toward Tennessee.

Central Virginia Wine Country

Charlottesville's Monticello wine trail carries Jefferson's 200-year-old wine ambition, with Richmond's river-city food scene an hour east and winery-and-brewery combinations worth touring throughout the Piedmont.

The Coast and Tidewater

Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia Beach, and the Eastern Shore's watermen villages meet at the Chesapeake's mouth — where the Bay Bridge-Tunnel makes one of America's great engineering drives (see FAQ). Assateague's wild ponies roam the shore's far tip.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to RV camp in Virginia?

April through October, with October the crown — Blue Ridge color, wine-country harvest, and battlefield light that photographers chase. Spring brings dogwoods and redbuds to the valley; coastal summers run warm and full.

Can I drive my RV on Skyline Drive?

Yes — RVs are welcome on all 105 miles, with one caveat: Marys Rock Tunnel near Thornton Gap has a posted clearance taller rigs must check before committing. The 35 mph pace, 75 overlooks, and entrance fee are all part of the experience; fuel up before entering.

What should RVers know about the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel?

The 17.6-mile crossing carries RVs routinely and rates among the world's great drives — but its tunnels restrict propane, with limits on container sizes and valve status. Check the CBBT's current propane and vehicle rules before routing, or take the inland loop through Richmond when in doubt.

Is overnight RV parking legal in Virginia?

Rules vary by locality, with Northern Virginia and beach towns strictest. Harvest Hosts stays keep it colonial-simple: an invited overnight on private property with the host's permission — an inn that's been hosting travelers since 1797, in one case.

How does RV camping at Harvest Hosts work in Virginia?

Harvest Hosts is an annual membership that lets RVers stay overnight at 255 Virginia wineries, markets, and historic attractions with no camping fees. Members request stays through the app, arrive in a self-contained RV, and support their hosts with a purchase — a Monticello-trail viognier, valley market provisions, or dinner at an 18th-century inn.

Is Harvest Hosts worth it for Virginia RV trips?

Yes — mountain and coastal campgrounds run $45–75/night in season and October books solid, so the $99/year Classic membership pays for itself in about two nights. For I-81 and I-95 travelers, Virginia hosts are among the most-used in the network.
