Wisconsin RV Camping Guide

Door County

The cherry capital of the Midwest stretches 75 miles into Lake Michigan, offering beautiful orchards, traditional fish boils, and charming lighthouse villages. Don't miss the iconic winding section of Highway 42 near Northport, one of Door County's most photographed roadways. It's a classic Wisconsin summer getaway that becomes equally stunning in fall, when the peninsula is covered in vibrant color. Host stays are often much easier to book than the area's popular campgrounds.

The Driftless and Great River Road

A 90-mile stretch along the Mississippi River reveals one of southwestern Wisconsin's quietest hidden gems. The route winds through coulee country, where ridge-top farms, trout streams, and dramatic river bluffs shape the landscape. La Crosse's historic brewery tradition anchors the corridor, while Minnesota and Iowa remain visible just across the river, with several bridges making it easy to cross between all three states. In October along the river, fall color settles over the bluffs and river valleys.

Madison and Green County

Against the backdrop of the nation's largest producer-only farmers' market, Wisconsin's capital is a place where food and community come together. Just south of Madison, Green County is worth a full day's tour, with Alpine-style cheeses in Monroe, hilltop winery stays, and chalet-inspired Swiss heritage layered into nearly every experience.

The Northwoods

Also known simply as "Up North," northern Wisconsin's picturesque lake-and-cabin country has a rhythm all its own: fishing, relaxing, and escaping the daily grind. Summer is peak camping season, and campgrounds can fill quickly. A stay with a welcoming host offers a more personal alternative, complete with Midwestern charm, a friendly "you betcha," and the feeling that you may want to stay awhile.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to RV camp in Wisconsin?

Wisconsin is best explored from May through October. Door County and the Northwoods are especially popular in June and July, when many travelers head north to escape city life, so traffic can increase even in more remote areas. Berry season brings u-pick stops to life in June and July, while fall unfolds slowly in shades of amber along the river bluffs. Winter travel is less likely — major highways are generally well maintained, but snow, cold, and limited access on smaller roads can make it difficult to stay mobile.

What exactly is a supper club?

A supper club is Wisconsin's signature dining tradition, blending the feel of a classic steakhouse with plenty of Midwestern flair. Expect relish trays, brandy Old Fashioneds, Friday-night fish fries, Saturday prime rib, and absolutely no rushing. Every region has its longtime favorites, and asking your host for a local recommendation is the best kind of research.

Why do cheese curds squeak?

Fresh cheese curds squeak against your teeth because their protein structure is still firm and springy — think of it as Wisconsin's unofficial freshness test. Ask your host where to find the best local curds, since there is almost always a cheese shop nearby. Buy them the same day they're made, then accept the inevitable: that bag probably won't survive the drive to your next destination.

Is overnight RV parking legal in Wisconsin?

Rules can vary from one municipality to the next. Instead of trying to sort through every small town or village ordinance, Harvest Hosts keeps overnight stays simple — you're invited to stay on private property with the host's permission, such as a berry farm rather than a public boat launch, so you can relax without worrying about an unexpected knock on the door.

How does RV camping at Harvest Hosts work in Wisconsin?

Harvest Hosts is an annual membership that lets RVers stay overnight at 290 Wisconsin breweries, farms, and wineries with no camping fees. Members request stays through the app, arrive in a self-contained RV, and support their hosts with a purchase — a historic-brewery flight, flats of just-picked berries, or cold-climate wine from a hilltop tasting room.

Is Harvest Hosts worth it for Wisconsin RV trips?

Yes — many campgrounds run $45–70/night and book solid in summer, so the $99/year Classic membership pays for itself in about two nights. The cheese-tour routing alone justifies the map time.

We enjoyed our night in this site. It’s a beautiful farm with a great sunset view. We were able to use the hookup to run our generator, which was a nice bonus. The site accommodated us nicely and we enjoyed the peace and quiet. Convenient to the interstate too! Thank you so much for the hospitality.

We enjoyed visiting this cranberry farm. Nice people and beautiful area. The free wine tasting was a nice added touch. Their store is well stocked with items to support their business. You can also get a tour of the bog. They have a little outdoor area with some games and sometimes offer music. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and recommend it to anyone driving through the area.

Relaxing stay, hosts were great, meat sticks are good and we have a bunch of other meat to cook up. Beautiful grass parking spot and fairly level. Close to road but quiet at night, no issues with it. We had some serious heat at first and a barn and some trees meant we didn't get full days of solar charging to keep up with our AC usage. We always keep a generator with us for these situations so all is good. Great Verizon cell service and enough clear sky for our Starlink to work perfectly as well. We would definitely stay here again.

We had some great cheese curds with farm fresh cheese! They were very tasty! We also had a delicious carnival crunch wrap and Philly cheese steak hoagie. We parked our 38 ft RV and tow vehicle on a level asphalt area and had a good night's rest.

Hosts are kind and generous. This spot immediately went to the top of our list. It’s very private as well as peaceful and safe and relaxing. A perfect spot and highly recommended. (The trains are audible but so are the songbirds). Oh, and we shared the hop rows with wild turkeys including 15 poults which I like to call turklets.
