Best known for its picturesque mountainscapes, resplendent fall foliage, and majestic elk herds, Rocky Mountain National Park occupies over 415 square miles of northern Colorado. Elevation here ranges from 7,840 feet at the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center to 14,259 feet at the summit of Longs Peak. Established in 1915, Rocky Mountain National Park (often shortened to RMNP) sees more than four million annual visitors who enter via Estes Park, Grand Lake, or Wild Basin, many of them in the park. Popular sites include Moraine Park, the Holzwarth Historic Site, Horseshoe Park, and the Kawuneeche Valley. Throughout the year, visitors can see everything from elk, mule deer, moose, and bighorn sheep to mountain lions, marmots, pikas, bears, and white-tailed ptarmigan. Harvest Hosts has plenty of locations within an hour of the entrances where you can park your RV overnight at a working farm, brewery, or distillery.
Harvest Hosts is a membership program for RV camping: unlock unlimited overnight stays at thousands of locations.
Learn MoreDistinct seasons in Colorado often spur most visitors to frequent Rocky Mountain National Park from May through October. During these months, higher elevations tame sweltering summer temperatures. But it's really the elk's rutting season that draws the most crowds, especially as these animals start to descend the mountain range in fall. Countless aspen trees also begin to change colors in September, fading from verdant greens into rich reds, yellows, oranges, and browns. If you plan on going during the busiest time of year, arrive early or plan a trip during the week to avoid crowds. Note that the free shuttle that typically services areas around Bear Lake Road and Moraine Park daily shortens its hours in September before shutting down for the season in winter.
Gateway cities to Rocky Mountain National Park include Grand Lake, Lyons, Loveland, Wild Basin, and Estes Park, Colorado. Many out-of-town visitors make it a point to stop at Estes Park's Stanley Hotel, whether to experience Colorado history in person or go on a ghost tour, or both. RVers who take skiing trips in Colorado also visit nearby Winter Park.
Inside the park. Moraine Park Campground and Glacier Basin Campground represent the two most popular of Rocky Mountain National Park's campgrounds. Although Glacier Basin welcomes RV campers, it's only open during the summer months. The largest campground in the park, Moraine Park Campground exposes RVers to elk in both spring and fall. It's also closest to many of the best hiking trails near Rocky Mountain National Park, including trailheads that lead to The Pool, Cub Lake, Fern Lake, and Spruce Lake. Note that Longs Peak Campground is tent-only camping.
Tips on reserving a campsite. During the park's busy season, reserve your two-hour timed-entry slot online or via the mobile app. Set a reminder for the night before you plan to arrive, as reservations are released at 7 p.m. Mountain Time. A small processing fee applies.
